Mural at Mura Lanyon Youth & Community Centre in Canberra
This street art project was to help rejuvenate the entrance area of the Mura Lanyon Youth & Community Centre in Canberra. The front entrance also shared a common urban area with a public skate park.
YWCA Canberra Youth Engagement team collaborated with innovative street artist Bjarni Wark from Happy Decay to organize a Street Art Transition initiative for youths in the Tuggeranong area.
The shift from primary to secondary school can be a source of excitement and apprehension for students and their families alike.
The Street Art Transition initiative aims to alleviate these concerns by offering a seamless and enjoyable experience for young individuals transitioning between primary and high school. This program facilitates connections, imparts new skills, reduces barriers, and fosters relationships with support personnel within the Education Directorate and the broader community. Research indicates that smooth transitions are crucial for students’ self-esteem and academic proficiency, while also deterring antisocial behaviors.
On the initial day of the initiative, students from Charles Conder Primary and Lanyon High School participated in a workshop at the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre. Activities included icebreakers, games, and trust-building exercises, followed by lessons and advice from HAPPY DECAY on painting techniques and equipment care.
The following day commenced with a check-in circle, succeeded by a workshop led by HAPPY DECAY focusing on various street art techniques, including washed-down paint, block colouring, mixed media, and stencilling.
