The Value of Exploring Ideas No One Asked For
A large part of my street art practice involves exploring concepts simply to see where they lead. Sometimes they go nowhere. But sometimes they grow into fully realised public artworks that shape how people experience a place.
Without that exploration, those ideas would never exist.
Is this kind of creative wandering unique to the arts, or is it part of innovation in every industry?
Mural Concept Development
These original mural artwork idea started by creating a this bird like creature to showcase how a mural could work using complementary colours to an existing heritage-listed building.

From the above mural idea, I wanted to relax and create a more playful sketch, which I created in the image below. From this idea i then wanted to create an artwork more focused on practice as a street artist, so I started to explore imagery with that in mind.
I started to explore the idea of creating a simple form, then using my patchwork / pattern-based style to fill its shape.

I like to use both digital and analogue for sketching; it may sound funny, but something shifts in my imagination when drawing in a sketchbook as opposed to using a digital tablet.

From my sketchbook drawing, I took them back into my drawing tablet to expand on the mural ideas. I created the following three mural concept artworks, which I feel will easily convert into large-scale mural art that will be interesting in an urban environment.
